The Tehri reservoir — formed by Asia's tallest dam at 260 m — stretches 42 sq km through a submerged Himalayan valley at 1750 m. Jet ski beside Himalayan peaks, kayak into turquoise waters, and camp on floating platforms as stars reflect off the stillest lake in India.
A warm look at the journey ahead
Tehri Lake — created by the 260 m high Tehri Dam on the Bhagirathi River — is one of Asia's largest man-made reservoirs, stretching 42 sq km through submerged Himalayan valleys at 1750 m. The submerged old Tehri town adds an eerie historical dimension to this engineering marvel. Since 2018, Tehri Lake has been developed as India's premier high-altitude water sports destination under Uttarakhand government's adventure tourism initiative, offering jet skiing, kayaking, motorboat rides, banana boat rides, speed boating, and overnight floating camps on lake pontoons. The surrounding landscape — with Chandrabadni and Srinagar peaks mirrored in the still turquoise waters — creates one of India's most photogenic adventure settings. Dhanaulti (40 km) makes an excellent day trip from Tehri for forest walks and Surkhanda Devi Temple.
